Stage 1. Introduction

Atekla was the web agency I co-founded, where I played a pivotal role in shaping its overall strategy and leading the design direction. The agency specialised in web development and branding, services that allowed us to serve a range of clients in need of both digital solutions and strong brand identities.

As a co-founder and art director, I was responsible for both the creative vision and the business side of the agency. I designed the agency’s website and led a team of product designers while managing relationships with clients. Over the course of four years, I watched the agency grow from a small startup into a respected player in the industry.

Stage 2. The Challenge

When we founded Atekla, we identified a gap in the market for web agencies that combined both solid technical expertise in web development with creative branding solutions. The challenge was not just in delivering exceptional web designs, but in building a brand that resonated with clients and stood out in a highly competitive market.

We also had to find the right balance between managing multiple clients, handling internal team dynamics, and maintaining a high standard of design work. Additionally, as a new agency, we faced the common challenge of acquiring clients and establishing credibility in the industry, which required a strong business strategy and effective communication.

Stage 3. My Role & Responsibilities

As one of the co-founders, I took on a wide range of responsibilities that spanned both business strategy and creative direction. I was deeply involved in shaping the agency’s vision and ensuring that our services aligned with the needs of our target market. As the art director, I was responsible for the creative direction of all projects, including the design of the agency’s website and the branding work we did for clients.

I managed a team of product designers, guiding them through the design process while ensuring our work met both client expectations and business objectives. I also played a key role in acquiring new clients, from making initial calls and pitching projects to managing relationships and ensuring client satisfaction throughout the process. This combination of strategic and creative responsibilities was essential in helping Atekla navigate its early years and grow into a successful agency.

Stage 4. The Process

Throughout my time at Atekla, I was involved in every step of the design process, from initial client consultations to final project delivery. When taking on web development projects, I worked closely with clients to understand their goals, gather requirements, and create wireframes and prototypes that aligned with their brand identities. I then oversaw the design execution, ensuring that the end product not only met functional requirements but also provided an exceptional user experience.

For branding projects, I collaborated with clients to define their visual identity and ensure it was consistent across all touch points. Managing internal processes, I facilitated team collaboration, ensuring that every project stayed on track and met deadlines. I also focused on stakeholder management, balancing client needs with the capabilities of the team and ensuring smooth communication between all parties involved.

Stage 5. Key Results & Impact

During my time at Atekla, I contributed to numerous successful projects, from developing websites that helped clients increase their digital presence to creating branding solutions that resonated with their target audiences. Our agency gained a solid reputation for delivering high-quality work, which was reflected in the growing number of clients and repeat business.

We were able to build lasting relationships with clients, many of whom returned for additional projects. One of the key metrics I was most proud of was our ability to grow the agency’s client base through word of mouth and referrals, which was a testament to the quality of work we delivered. The success of our projects not only helped clients achieve their business goals but also solidified Atekla’s position in the industry.

Conclusion & Learning

Reflecting on my experience at Atekla, I learned invaluable lessons that shaped my career. I developed a deep understanding of how to blend creative vision with business strategy, ensuring that the work we produced was both aesthetically pleasing and aligned with client objectives. I also learned the importance of client relationships, balancing creative integrity with client feedback, and how to lead a team through complex projects.

Managing the agency taught me how to navigate the challenges of running a business, from acquiring clients to managing a team and maintaining growth. The experience ultimately reinforced my belief in the power of design as a business tool and prepared me for the next chapter in my career as a product designer.
